As I get older I sometimes start to feel stuck. This song is about that feeling. I’ve worked a lot of tedious day jobs. Sometimes I feel like there’s no room for fun or spontaneity, but I get into my basement studio at night and I can let loose and make something new. It’s how I avoid getting set in stone and I hope everyone has something like that. I started writing this song right before all of this quarantine stuff happened and I was planning to put it out on an album later this year, but now feels like the right time for it.
lyrics
If our days are only ever set in stone
Can I put my pen to paper, I don’t know
And if the nuts and bolts inside your head can never quite be known
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
I meet her eyes across the table, but no words
The leaves drift to the ground outside, departing birds
And though we once roamed mountains, obligations pull us down to chairs
In tidy little rows, we’re set in stone
In tidy classroom rows we’re set in stone
I don’t believe the answer’s out there
A sea of red tail lights, that wicked glare
Avert your eyes, don’t meet his stare
I didn’t pull you from that line to spend your precious life like this
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
The soldiers stand in solitary rows
Can the vanquished ride again? I just don’t know
And as I walk among them now, I hear them calling out to me
Today you fly but can’t you see we’re set in stone?
In tidy little rows we’re set in stone
I don’t believe the answer’s out there
A sea of red tail lights, that wicked glare
Avert your eyes, don’t meet his stare
I didn’t pull you off that line to spend your precious life like this
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
I don’t believe the answer’s out there
A sea of red tail lights, that wicked glare
Avert your eyes, don’t meet his stare
I didn’t pull you off that line to spend your precious life like this
I didn’t pull you off that line to spend your precious life like this
I didn’t pull you off that line for you to come apart like this
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
In tidy little rows we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
Gone are the days, we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
Seems to me we’re set in stone, we’re set in stone
